Zebrafish genome sequenced

A full and detailed zebrafish (Danio rerio) genome has been published in Nature, this is a detailed and comprhensive sequence that will enable researchers to use the zebrafish even more effectively as a model for developmental biology. Amazingly, despite the zebrafish only having 6000 protein coding genes, they have a number of key genes that have analogues in complex conditions that are typically thought to be “human”, like autism and schizophrenia, making the zebrafish even more widely applicable to research. I first came a across the article via the Nature podcast, which is well worth a listen to!
